jazz plus picks 005 | Laark | 24.04.17

We caught up with fresh new hip hop producer Laark to see what tunes he’s digging before performing at jazz plus presents this Saturday.

Laark will play alongside Bristol based funk group Jackson at jazz plus presents this Saturday 29th April at Notting Hill Arts Club. £6 advance tickets available HERE.

Ras G – Council of Nicea 325 AD

This is my favourite Ras G track. Heavy futuristic hip-hop named after a 5th century ecumenical Christian council. I also love how the loops repeat just slightly out of kilter.

Maurice Ravel, Trio for piano, violin and cello (Heifetz, Piatigorsky, Rubinstein) Mov. III

To my ears so much of Ravel’s music is hip-hop waiting to happen. You may or may not hear some (/a lot of) Ravel sneaking into the set on Saturday night.

Chico Buarque & Ennio Morricone – Rotativa / Roda Viva

The Ennio Morriconne/Chico Buarque collaboration is seriously worth checking out.

Ennio Morriconne’s insane composition and orchestration meet bossa nova; I could ask for little more in life. You may or may not hear some Morricone sneaking into the set on Saturday night.

I Jahbar – Spy

Just getting into this, I’m pretty ignorant. I think the genre is called ‘dancehall’. You may or may not hear some I Jahbar acappellas sneaking into the set on Saturday night.

Uku Kuut – Jazzin’ for Montreux

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4NsHlXYt38

If you’re in the mood for video-game quality 80s cheese, Uku Kuut is your man. Listen all the way to the end of this track for the delicious vocals. You may or may not hear some Uku Kuut sneaking into the set on Saturday night.
