Brand new sounds come to Jackdaw, London with the launch of jazz plus, a record label that will present a fresh approach to the jazz genre. Expect explosive combinations of soul, hiphop, funk and straight ahead jazz from Birmingham band DISTRICTS and Londoners YESA SIKYI.
Yesa Sikyi (pronounced yessa seechee) came together on the jazz course at Trinity College of Music in London and are now approaching their final year. Having recently released their debut album ‘Vol. 1’ featuring 5 original tunes, the group are gaining an increasing following in London and beyond for their repertoire of beautiful arrangements of standards and their ever-expanding repertoire of original tunes. Performances at The Vortex, the Lancaster and Manchester Jazz Festivals and supporting the internationally acclaimed Troyka have led them to have been described as ‘The next generation of fabulous young players’.
Districts is made up of some of the UK’s leading rising jazz musicians from Birmingham who engage and entertain audiences with their personal take on a mix of jazz, pop, and funk. All six members of the group have studied jazz at Birmingham Conservatoire, each bringing a wealth of musical experience and a highly individual voice to the group. They have played in a number of venues around Birmingham including the Hare and Hounds, Fleet Street Kitchen, The Yardbird and The Jam House, and are fast establishing themselves as a formidable creative force. They play original music inspired by Janek Gwizdala, Herbie Hancock, Snarky Puppy and a diverse array of other musicians. In February 2016 Districts signed to the jazz plus productions label ready for the release of their debut album later this year.
