Meet our collective…

Jazz Plus Ensemble is the big new project. Jazz Plus is 1⃣a promoter 2⃣a label 3⃣a booking agency 4⃣a collective.

We’ve brought together 18 hugely talented musicians that we work with to form the all new Jazz Plus Ensemble to reinvent big band music for a modern audience. The group plays original compositions, arrangements of pop, hip hop, funk and electronica.

We want you to meet our musicians. We have some of the brightest talents from conservatoires across the UK, National Youth Jazz Orchestra veterans, and musicians who’ve received airplay on Gilles Peterson and BBC Radio 3’s Jazz Now and much more.

Drums

First up, everybody’s favourite groover and grinner Tristan ‘Trusty’ Bacon. This is the star of the world famous “trusty click”, ticking the fine musicians of Jazz Plus Ensemble through ever more demanding yet of course vastly entertaining rehearsals. Believe and you will become 1⃣ with his snare.

Trombone

One of four trombonists, in the band, Laura Piggford stopped by for a chat. Hats off to her for juggling playing trombone in Jazz Plus Ensemble and finding time to hold down a full time teaching job too.

Tenor sax

A harsh critic might say Jazz Plus tenor sax player, John Somerton, seems uncertain in his interview. He’s certainly not unSomerton. He’s definitely convinced, we promise. A former member of Durham’s legendary funk collective, The Funkyard, the affectionately and innovatively nicknamed “Somerton” lives for heavy grooves and takes his tenor sax to bed with him. We love him.

Some of the band struggled to kick off their interviews, but we got there in the end.
